South Africa's World Heritage Sites

Robben Island.

Robben Island is known the world over as a place of banishment, exile, imprisonment and isolation. For nearly 400 years colonial and apartheid rulers banished those they regarded as political troublemakers, social outcasts and the unwanted of society to this rocky outcrop in Table Bay.

Designated as a World Heritage Site on December 1st 1999, Robben Island is now a national museum open to visitors.

The Cradle of Humankind, Sterkfontein.

The Cradle of Humankind designated as a World Heritage Site on December 1st 1999 provides the most extensive fossil and artifact sequence in Southern Africa for a period 4 to 1 million years ago. It is internationally acclaimed because it has produced the first adult fossil Australopithecus, as well as hundreds of other specimens such as the famous Mrs. Ples.

The site provides important information on the early development of the human family and the environment in which they lived.
